Discovery how to write a short film with Lena Liozzi at the Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. January 9 through February 6, 2012 (class not held January 16th). New Acrylic Paiting Class Offered at the Center by Artist Kirk Larsen

Acrylic painting: Come learn this very versatile medium and its many uses. This workshop is for the beginner to intermediate artist wanting to learn how to take an idea or concept to a great work of art to hang on the wall. This is a six week class where you will learn color, design, balance and many painting techniques. A list of materials will be available to registering students.

Kirk Larsen has been a professional self-taught artist for 12 years. His artistic background includes murals in homes and businesses throughout Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, and Nevada, fine art paintings in acrylic and oil, color consulting, and decorative painting.

Mary Wells will hold a holiday card making the pochoir way at the Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden on Thursday, November 17th from 7 to 9 p.m. This workshop is for anyone ages 8 through adult. Holiday Card Making the Pochoir Way: Beginning with a simple drawing or print of an image, the pochoir technique will be used to print a series of cards. Pochoir is a process using multiple stencils, one for each color, and watercolor. Each participant will take home a series of cards (approximately 25) for holiday mailing.

Call for Entry: Art on the Tree as well as under it.

Eligibility:

The Eccles Community Art Center is interested in decorating an art center tree with art. This planned holiday exhibit is open to artists who presently reside in the state of Utah. We are looking for small framed canvases, watercolor or mixed media works (maximum 8” x 10”), hand blown, fused glass, turned wood, or ceramic ornaments and other original works to decorate one of the art center’s trees. Reproduction prints are not eligible.

Submissions:

Please submit sample photographs of your work via e-mail to eccles@xmission.com or regular mail: Art on the Tree, Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden, Utah 84401. Please include with your photographs: your name, address, phone number, and a short artist statement. Submissions due October 20, 2011.

Artists will be notified as to chosen work after October 25, 2011.

Actual items will need to be delivered by November 18, 2011 before 4:30 p.m. Artists should provide an accounting sheet including their name, title of the work, and price including the Art Center’s commission. Work should be ready to display. The art center staff may refuse any work that is not ready to display or is damaged on delivery.

Items will be displayed November 29 through December 30, 2011.

Unsold art may be retrieved January 2, 3 & 4, 2012 during regular business hours (9 a.m. to 5p.m.).

Sales:

All art on the Tree works must be for sale. The Eccles Community Art Center will retain a 35% commission on sales. Works sold may be removed from the tree prior to the end of the exhibit, so that patrons may enjoy them during the holiday season.

Liability:

Every reasonable precaution will be taken to protect work submitted. All work submitted will be insured through January 4, 2012 while at the Art Center. Work left at the Art Center after January 4, 2012 is at artist’s own risk and storage charges may accrue. The Eccles Community Art Center does not accept responsibility for works damaged due to incorrect or poor framing or hanging wire.

Opening Reception:

A reception for the artists will be held in association with the December exhibition on Friday, December 2, 2011 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Eccles Community Art Center.

The board of directors of the Eccles Community Art Center, are pleased to welcome Patrick Poce as the new executive director of the art center. Mr. Poce will fill the post retiring executive director, Sandy Havas will leave at the end of June after 35 years of distinguished service.

A reception to honor Sandy Havas and welcome Patrick Poce will be held Friday, July 1, 2011 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden.

Mr. Poce is best known as the proprietor of the Posy Place at 2757 Washington Blvd. Ogden. A shop that he has owned for 34 years.

The Gallery also received a new shipment of the lovely local art oriented Junior League Cookbook. These cookbooks make wonderful wedding gifts, beautiful and practical.

My Internship Experience by Sarah Wood

I had two favorite days at my internship. The first day was the art auction, it was so fun to be apart of something so big. I helped Arlene Muller get all the displays ready for the silent auction and we were on our feet for a long time but it was fun to talk to her and get to know her and by the end of the day she was calling me her daughter! Then when the dinner began I didn’t know who to sit by, but she was there and let me sit by her which made the night even more fun!

The second favorite day of the internship was the day Jon Williams came to the art center and was judging the photography competition. I had never talked to a professional photographer before so it was nice to talk to someone who knew a lot about photography and art and who’s had a lot of experience in the art business. Since I’ve talked to him I’ve learned more about where to attend school and how to progress in photography and some do’s and don’ts about what to look for or do with my photos.

At my internship I figured some things out like asking questions and memorizing names and faces because a lot of people are in the art business and I’m starting to recognize people and names and sometimes I can even tell whose work it is just by looking at it which is so cool to me.

I am very grateful I got the opportunity to do this internship and I know, even more now, that I want to go into art and photography so I can be apart of something like this and learn from my experiences.

About the Book
More Than Petticoats: Remarkable Women of Utah, published in 2010 by Globe Pequot Press, is a reader-friendly look at Utah history through short, entertaining biographies of some of its most interesting women.
The book tells the stories of twelve strong and determined women who broke through the social, cultural, and political barriers of the day.

They include Emmeline B. Wells (1828–1921), suffragist, president of the Relief Society, and editor of the Women’s Exponent; and Reva Beck Bosone (1895–1983), Utah Congresswoman and the state’s first female judge; and the Bassett sisters, who hung around with Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch.

It’s a must-read for anyone interested in women’s stories or Utah history – or for anyone seeking inspiration from others’ lives.

Utah native Christy Karras is the author or co-author of four books: Motorcycle Touring in the Pacific Northwest, Motorcycle Touring in the Southwest; More than Petticoats: Remarkable Utah Women, and Scenic Driving: Utah. She is a regular contributor to the Seattle Times and has written for publications ranging from Salt Lake City Weekly to the New York Times. She teaches college-level writing and editing and also loves speaking to groups and giving workshops on writing, editing, and publishing.

Before moving to Seattle, Christy was associate editor at Wasatch Journal, where she wrote stories and managed a team of freelance writers. Before that, as a staff reporter for the Salt Lake Tribune, she covered arts, entertainment, the outdoors, and travel. Painting in Watercolor with Adrian Van Suchtelen:

Nationally known, Logan artist, Adrian Van Suchtelen will teach watercolor techniques while working with students in the creation of paintings during a three day workshop.

During his 37 years at Utah State, Adrian Van Suchtelen taught drawing, printmaking, painting, design, sculpture and served as a graduate director. As a guest artist, he has instructed at universities and art center throughout the western United States. He is currently Professor Emeritus.

A minimum of 10 students will be need for this workshop to be held. The maximum is set at 15 students.

On Wednesday Jeanine will be teaching another children's watercolor workshop. Here is the class description and information: Children’s Watercolor: Mixed Media Landscapes: With artist, Jeanine Cobb students will explore how to put a watercolor landscape together using gesso to add texture. Students will be introduced to skills which will be used to complete a finished work by the end of the classes. The class size will be kept small to allow students to receive individualized instruction. The class will be limited to 12 students, with a minimum of 5 needed. Supplies provided.

My name is Sarah Wood. I/m 17 and I go to Davis High School. I have a love for photography and would love to be a photographer when I grow up! I'm grateful for the internship at the Eccles Community Art Center and look forward to the experiences I'm going to have while interning.

This first picture is of the stained glass window. I love the colors and the design. I think it looks amazing with the light in the background.

The woodwork all around the house is beautiful!

I love all the light fixtures in the house. They're all so different, yet they all tie together perfectly.

The door knobs are beautiful and look so elegant.

The design on this light fixture is amazing even through you can't really see it (in this picture).

This is my favorite light fixture because it looks like a flower and the design on the wood in the back is gorgeous.

The design of this corner is so unique with the wood, it makes it so interesting.

The Palette Club of Ogden is exhibiting works from their Winter Competition at the Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden through January 29th.

Thirty-nine artists in categories from beginner to master participated in this competition.

The judge for the competition, local artist Shana Kunz indicated “The show is so diverse and so impressive! The quality of the work made it difficult to judge! There are many artists that I know and are familiar with their work, I tried to be as objective and unbiased as possible. This was difficult to do. I weighted technical skill, originality, creativity and confidence into my decision with the most important being originality. Any piece with a strong emotional content caught my eye, but they needed technical ability as well to support that emotion.”

The Palette Club of Ogden was established October 7, 1943 with the stated purpose to be the advancement of community interest in art and the encouragement of artists. These remain the goals of the club today, 65 years later. The Palette Club has continued an unbroken existence since 1943, and has a membership of over one hundred members, residing from Logan to Bountiful. The club is open to all artists in any media from beginner to professionals.

The Palette Club of Ogden sponsors several juried shows and seasonal exhibits throughout the year as well as its members exhibit works at a variety of venues in Ogden and surrounding areas.

Gallery Theater Production: The Reach Of You

The weather outside may be cold and stormy, but the cast of “THE REACH OF YOU” will warm your hearts as they come together to express themselves about “Love,” in words and music. Clarence Socwell, North Ogden poet/actor, and producer of the Gallery Theater begins with a poem that asks whether in the pursuit of love can’t we all be like Attis, son of Cybele, who remained forever young and fresh as violets in spring. Thereafter, the other participants explore all aspects of love—the ups and downs, meetings and partings, unrequited and lasting aspects, the lifting and thwarting of the spirit—all in poetic thought and exciting music. You can certainly relate to emotions displayed as the ensemble responds with their own thoughts (as well as thoughts of the lyricists and composers whose songs are included.) The discourse ends with a rousing song, a medley from “Music Man,” sung by FOURTUNATE GENTS.

Other than Socwell, who is a well-known poet, and an actor who has performed in over 30 community productions the cast includes:

The show-tune male quartet, FOURTUNATE GENTS who met singing in local musicals, consisting of Brady Cash, Centerville, Steve Plowman, Bountiful, Jeremy Nordfelt, Centerville, and Jonathon D. Crittenden, South Weber.

Jessica Morgan, Pleasant View, soloist of both classical and modern music.

Amy Elmer, Pleasant View, musician who will be adding accompaniments and instrumental passages.

James Archibald, Layton, (from Boston MA), rhythm and blues singer, songwriter and poet.

Rounding out the ensemble will be Judy Johns, Pleasant View, poet and writer, as well as inspirational speaker.

As you watch and participate, you will appreciate the talent of all members of the cast, and will fill your minds and hearts with thoughts of love during cold winter months in anticipation of Valentine’s Day and Spring.

The Gallery Theater, a Community Theater that produces one-act plays by local authors. This gallery has an open seating policy and is limited to an audience of 50.

Mad Science: Mad Science invites you to see how much fun hands-on science can be. Mad Science’s goal is to spark the curiosity of children in kindergarten through 6th grade (Ages: 5 through 11 years old) and instill a clear understanding of what science is really about and how it affects the world around us. Looking ahead to January Visual Art Classes

ADULT/CHILD:

Acrylic Painting & Design: Using bright colors and concentrating on creative design, students will paint their own 16”x20” canvas. They will explore design principles, using bold shapes and colors. They will be exposed to a variety of tools in completing their project, including brushes, rollers and other items with the acrylic paint medium. Students will paint borders around their paintings so framing will not be necessary. Each student will create and take home a beautiful piece of art. This is a perfect adult/child workshop to attend together.

A minimum of 7 students is required, with a maximum of 16 students per session. Supplies provided.

Middle Eastern and Tribal Fusion Belly Dance classes available at the center

Middle Eastern (Belly) Dance: Technique: A review of basic moves and steps used in Middle Eastern dance with emphasis on technique and simple combinations. Belly dance (in Arabic, “Raqs Sharki”, dance Oriental) is a fun way to socialize and benefit from physical activity. All levels, ages welcome.

Zuhra Zakiyah, Candace Baker, started belly dancing in high school. Ten years ago, she reconnected with her passion for the dance. She has studied locally, and has added to her education by attending a multitude of workshops with professional internationally known dancers. She has attended the Middle Eastern Music and Dance Camp in Mendocino. Zuhra has traveled through Egypt, Morocco and Turkey dancing informally many times with the locals. She is familiar with the different styles of Middle Eastern dance along with the rhythms and regions of many folk styles.

Yoga Philosophy for the 21st Century: This workshop will teach participants how ancient yoga practices may help make modern life more livable. The concepts of Kundalini power, the Chakra system and the eight (8) limbs of yoga will be discussed. Yoga adds to your physical, mental and spiritual well being.

Restorative Yoga: A continuing class to help de-stress, and maintain overall health. This class will help to counter any type of disorder brought on by repetitive movements. Saturday Morning Vinyasa Flow Yoga: Participants will practice the correct alignment of basic yoga poses and learn how to link them together through movement. Be prepared to build strength, balance, and stamina, all while relieving stress and tension.  The poses in this class can be modified for everyone from beginner to advanced students.

Lori Parrish has been practicing yoga for nine years, teaching for four years. She has trained with Jo Canfield, Dana & Baron Baptiste, Charlotte Bell, to name a few. With a background in dance, she has a great appreciation and awareness of how the body moves.  In her own practice, she has found that experimenting with each pose, and movement within the pose, is the best way to find what works best for you. Lori likes teaching all types of classes, but especially enjoys teaching kids and prenatal yoga.

Fiction Writing: This workshop is for experienced and beginning writers. Develop the basic mechanics of writing fiction and the components of narrative storytelling, including idea generation, plot arc, setting, character development, dialogue, and pacing. Learn strategies for navigating challenges such as writer’s block, dead ends, revision, plot holes, creating a creative space, and finding time to write. Workshop your story in a constructive and supportive environment with a published author. Creative writing can be a fun, inexpensive, and deeply rewarding form of personal expression. No previous experience necessary. Those interested in publishing their work will learn how to format manuscripts, write query letters and synopses, and effectively research publishing forums.

Adrian Stumpp is a graduate of the creative writing program at Weber State. His fiction has appeared or is forthcoming in national publications such as Aisthesis, BlazeVOX, and Emprise Review. He is a three time winner of the Utah Arts Council’s annual creative writing competition, in which his collection of short stories, All the Variables & Other Love Stories, won first place in 2009. He has studied under such award-winning writers as Antonya Nelson and Sean Murphy.

Play Writing Workshop: In this workshop students will be introduced to writing with an emphasis on one-act plays from basic concept and first word through revision and possible production in the Gallery Theater.

Clarence P. Socwell, writer, poet, actor has been awarded several prizes for his one-act plays. He received a production prize from the Utah Arts Council for his full length play, “Cake with Forty Candles” which had a successful run at Weber State University. He has performed in more than 30 Weber State and Community Theater plays in Ogden, Perry, and Columbia, SC, as well as conducting various workshops in writing, including plays, for the League of Utah Writers and Utah State Poetry Society. He has been stage manager for Weber State and stagehand for Ballet West.
